ULTRA Saranac Lake 6ers
To become a Ultra 6er one must complete all six mountains as seen in the map below within a consecutive 24 hours. Although you can do this at any time after may 25th if you choose the challenge, I want to see how close I can get to the top of the list! This might be one of those things where a personal achievement is tested.
My Strategy...
My thought is too hit up the furthest mountain away first, St. Regis Mountain with a round trip of 6.8 miles I should be able to knock this one out in a decent time with a nice quick pace on the flats, and in order to maneuver through the trails faster I will not be using my poles, I will be using all fours which in my past experiences from the 33/46 thus far is much faster.
I will then take my trip over to Ampersand Mountain one that I have already completed in the past.... knowing the trail I will be able to finish this 5.4 mile round trip in a couple hours.
Also in order to salvage as much time as I can I will have a driver and a escort to each location to be picked up and dropped off.
Next will be McKenzie Mountain and Haystack Mountain both which are located on the same trail so this will take care of 2 of the 6 in one shot.
Being a 10.4 mile round trip this is going to take the longest but will be almost done and will most likely get my second wind I always get as I hike these long trips.
Next will be Scarface Mountain which is another 6.8 mile round trip hike... from what I have seen I should be able to make up some serious time on the flats on these hikes and this one should only take me a good 3.5 to 4 hours.
And finally.... depending on time I am unsure whether I am going to try and finish "as fast as I can" or maybe wait until morning around 4-5 am and take off for the final 6er mountain Mount Baker... the 1.8 mile round trip hike in the immediate area of town. This quick hour trip will be the final 6er and will be able to head back down and ring the bell and earn my Ultra Saranac Lake 6er title by 8am!!
