Mt. Emmons
April 8th 2014
Attending this hike was Matt Daddio Jones and myself.
Looking from Mt. Donaldson, the trek over to Mt. Emmons looks amazing with a drop of maybe a couple hundred feet (atleast 300 since its required to be a seperate 46er) on a nice looking ridge.... yea it may be muddy but atleast we dont have to drop down into a col as we did for Seward Mountain. WRONG!! Go figure the trail follows the ridge for a couple hundred feet and down ya go!!! If nothing else makes you frustrated in the ADKs, you can count on this to do the job. A nice looking ridge at your service and lets make the trail drop a thousand feet so we can climb it all over again.
I have to throw this into the commentary only because its funny as all get out and its the little things that make me laugh.... sooo as we are heading over to Emmons heading back up.... daddio had been getting a little frustrated. It always builds up... builds up... builds up and usually he just starts going to down with his hilarious remarks..... nope not this time. This time im hiking behind him and all of a sudden there was a rock climb roughly 3 feet high we needed to figure out how to jump up.... well daddio just stops dead in his tracks... staring for a second then bends down a let the rock have it. Yelling at the damn rock as loud as he could. I died laughing so hard... its definetly one of those moments you needed to be there for.
Regardless whether we like it or not we have to hike it over, and it was a little more motivating having other groups of hikers keeping you going giving you updates and trail conditions along the way... as we did the same for them. After 50 min of climbing down and back up the unnecessary climbing we made it to our 44th summit!!!! Mt. Emmons. The view from Emmons was pretty treed in as expected, a small area to sit down to take a break and some pictures at the summit which we certainly did. Daddio and I decided to only stick around on the mountain for a small 15 min break and take back off to head over to Donaldson again before our final decent. After our hour trek back over to Donaldson we started our hike back down the mountain and back to the horse trails which will take us back to the car. Although we still havnt tackled Seymour Mt. (which is the fourth mountain of the Seward Range) I would say the Seward Range is basically a 46er / aspiring 46er range of mountains, because of the distance and little viewage received. There are many other peaks easier and shorter that give you better views. One can tell its a 46er range when you talk to all the other hikers and they are all 30 or more mountains into their 46... Haha. It was nice and refreshing to have been the most experienced ADK climber that day!! 44 down 2 to go baby!!!!!!
