Continuing on our journey to the Dix range, we needed to move from South Dix to East Dix. This Mountain to Mountain hike was 1.1 miles, and the only way to continue on our travels we needed to head to east dix and then turn back around to South Dix to the junction of Hough Peak. So as i stated before we decided to drop our backs at the junction and relieve ourselves from our backpacks for a couple miles of the hike. So we all grabed a water and headed out to East Dix.
East Dix was actually a very interesting hike because of the rocky summit it contains in order to get to the summit. Just under an hour we had successfully summited our 18th 46er mountain of East Dix, because we didnt have our backpacks slowing us down, we were able to travel the 1.1 miles in under an hour.
We were all very rested and comfortable because of the weight that we had droped back at the junction, so we took a small break on the summit and took some pictures to document our successful summit, along with some awesome pictures from the summit of the adirondack Mountains. On our way down we decided that with the timing that we had ...approximetly 4:30pm that having to hike and summit peak number 4 and 5 for thr day and droping down to the lower camp site was going to be impossible to accomplish in the daylight, so we decided to camp in the col between Hough Peak and South Dix. So we took our time hiking back from East Dix to South Dix considering that camp was only a half mile away from the junction.
!!!!!! Camping in the Adirondacks!!!!!!
Soooo we reached camp much faster than anticipated and had quite a bit of daylight left in the day but not enough to make it to the other camp so we set camp up. After setting both tents up and having something to eat we started to make a fire to keep us warm from the fridgid cold that the top of the high peaks have at night. After a couple hours of trying to get completely soaked camp wood trying to catch we were unsuccessful in making a fire. So at this point Dad and I decided to hang the bear canister in a tree about 100 feet from the camp site in case of any critters smelling the food would draw them away from us...or supposed too. Couple Hours later..... Its dark out, the tempature has now dropped to about 35-40 degrees and we have only but a emergency blanket and each other to keep us warm. It had gotten so cold that it was unbearable, so if you can picture this.... in a 2 person tent !! Dad, me, andrea and the dog all in the tent trying to lay down unable to stretch out our legs because the tent is only 5'3'' long. Very uncomfortable and very cold... not to mention the rocks that were being layed on. Needless to say 2:30-3am rolls around and we decided to take a break from trying to sleep and we sat up (attempted too) to rest our muscles and bones. After a few min or little longer we decided to lay back down to see if we could get atleast one more hour of sleep. To see how the rest of the night went....Did anything get into our bear canister???? continue the journey by going to the Adirondack 46ers page and clicking on Hough Peak or by Clicking here!!!
