Last but not the Last!!! The last Summit to be had this trip but only the begining of our adventures in the adirondacks the 5th and final peak in the Dix Range.... Dix Mountain itself... with its stature of being number 6 in the height of the high peaks this peak stands very tall with an artic alpine zone.
So I left you off when we were leaving Hough Peak to head to Dix Mountain, the decent down the mountain seemed to look worse than what we really needed to do. On our way through the trails there are 3 different outlook points on the way up Dix which makes the climb much more enjoyable and easier to climb. Until we meet a little curve ball in the trails... so i was hiking up the trail when i got to a point where it seemed to go nowhere.... and i knew that they would not make us go up a rock wall that was nearly verticle and almost impossible to climb with bags. So we searched and let it be known that was surely the trail....
BUT we had rope from hanging the bear canister in the trees, AWESOME!!! so i took my bag off, scaled the rock (more like shimmied up the rock) and was able to tie the rope to a "sturdy" but loose tree shrub trunk and was able to have a rope to pull everyone up the side of the rock wall. But what about puppy.... yesss puppy too, we had andrea and dad first come to the top using the rope then i went back down to be with the dog and my pack. In order to get the puppy up the mountain we decided to tie the rope to the puppys harness and hoist her up the mountain til she could get footing and run the rest of it up. Over all we were successful in the obsticle given to us, which if we didnt have the rope im not sure how we would have been able to make it up this part of the trail.
Summit Number 20 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now for the final Huraww !! we finally made it to the top of the beckhorn !! which seems to look higher than the actual summit about 100 yards away, which it really is not. We took some cool photos from this part of the mountain then went off to the final summit of the Dix Range Journey and our first 5 peak trip Dix Mountain. We officially reached the summit of Dix Mountain at 9 am summiting our 20th peak in the adirondacks!!!!
The views were absolutely Amazing with clear skies!! and a nice cool breeze off the north side of the mountain. We could see nearly all the other high peaks in the Adirondacks from this Summit, with the best part of the whole trip not having to share any summit with anyone, we were alone the whole time on every mountain, which for some of you might think thats not fun but really, it is so much more relaxing and accomplishing with no one around when you summit a high peak. I would prefer no one on a summit when i reach than a bunch of people on the summit when we reach the top. So after a few photos documenting our summiting of Dix Mountain and Completion of the Dix Range we headed back to our 6.6 mile hike down the mountain to the car at Elk Lake.
The way down is as it always is..... long and grueling haha every hike out is the same as the last, you just want to get to the car and head home as fast as you can .... but you can only go as fast as the trail will take you.
Over all finished the Dix Range with a total of 5 summits 16.7 Miles (An extra 1 mile of lost woods = 17.7 Miles) 31 Hours 30 Min
Dix Mountain : 4870 Feet
Elevation Gained :
Timing : 1.3 Miles (2 Hours) *timing from Hough Peak
